# The area you draw and assign

A sales territory is the area you draw and assign. Knockdesk is field sales software, and sales territory meaning is that boundary, not a shared list of pins.

## A sales territory has to keep two names off the same doors

You feel it when Friday has three exports and two reps both sold the same house. Sales territory meaning is ownership first. You draw a polygon, a circle, or a rectangle, or you pick a zip, a county, or a state. Assignment routes the turf. It does not, by itself, move every pin.

**Draw.** Trace it, or pick a zip, county, or state shape. That is the sales territory.

**Assign.** Give that area to a team or one field rep so the next cut has an owner.

**Cut.** Turf inside the boundary cannot overlap turf you already cut. The 40 shared doors in the example should never exist.

## The area is not the day's work

A sales territory is the area. Turf is the work cut from it. Route optimization orders unfinished pins on that turf. Do not call the area the pack.

- [Turf](/glossary/turf): Work cut from a sales territory so one rep can hold it.

- [Route optimization](/glossary/route-optimization): Driving order on the open pins, after the area exists.

## How Knockdesk tracks it

You draw the sales territory, assign it, then cut turf inside it by lasso, by a CSV of addresses, or from pins already on the map. The lasso has to stay inside the territory. One vendor sits on that turf. Full desk is on the pricing page.

## Keep going from the boundary
